5 Ways to Make Refugees Feel Welcome

RESQUE INTERNATIONAL

Refugees in a new country face immense challenges: adjusting to an unfamiliar culture, learning a new language, finding employment, and building a sense of belonging. But with small, intentional actions, we can help create a welcoming environment that fosters hope and opportunity.

Here are five ways YOU can make a difference and help refugees feel at home in your community:

1. Greet New Neighbors with Warmth and Kindness

A simple smile, a friendly greeting, or a small welcome gift can go a long way in making someone feel valued. Many refugees arrive after experiencing hardship and uncertainty. Showing kindness and hospitality reassures them that they are not alone. If you see a new family in your neighbourhood, introduce yourself, offer to answer any questions, or even invite them for a coffee or meal. These small gestures create meaningful connections and establish friendship and trust.

2. Offer Help with Navigating Local Services and Transportation

Navigating a new city can be overwhelming, especially for those who are unfamiliar with local systems. If you know a refugee family or individual, offer to help them understand public transportation routes, grocery shopping options, healthcare services, and schools. A simple act like showing someone how to use the bus or explaining how to access a community service can empower them to gain confidence in their new environment.

3. Share Resources for Jobs, Housing, and Language Classes

Employment and stable housing are key to a refugee’s successful resettlement. Many refugees are eager to work but may not know where to start. Share information about job openings, community job fairs, or organizations that offer career support. Additionally, language barriers can be a significant hurdle. Connecting refugees with free or affordable English classes helps them integrate into society more quickly. ResQue International offers valuable resources in employment, education, and language support—encourage refugees to take advantage of these programs!

4. Respect Their Cultural Traditions and Learn About Their History

Each refugee has a unique cultural background, carrying rich traditions, customs, and histories. One of the best ways to make them feel respected and valued is by showing interest in their culture. Ask about their traditions, try their cuisine, or attend cultural events. At the same time, be mindful and respectful of differences. Learning about their experiences fosters mutual understanding and breaks down stereotypes, creating a more inclusive community for all.

5. Volunteer with Local Organizations, Like ResQue International!

To make an even more significant impact, consider volunteering with organizations supporting refugee resettlement and integration. Whether it’s mentoring a refugee, helping with English lessons, assisting in job training programs, or donating essential items, your involvement can change lives. ResQue International is always looking for compassionate volunteers to support our mission. Every effort—big or small—contributes to building a more welcoming and empowered community.

Small actions make a BIG difference. Together, we can create a world where every refugee feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive. Let’s stand for kindness, inclusion, and opportunity for all.
